Motorola NVG510 and VPN Problems
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:46:28 AM »
I recently got a Motorola NVG510 router and I cannot connect to my VPN

I spent 8 hours yesterday toying with it - the interface is nothing like what I am used to

I am not alone on this issue - after googling " Motorola NVG510 VPN "

I did a factory reset this morning on the router and am ready to start from scratch if anyone can help

AT&T doesn't have any idea as they don't configure anything other than getting online and wireless setup
Motorola wants to charge $30 over the phone with no guarantees I will be able to connect

I know I need to open port 1723 - but with this new interface - I am at a loss as to how to connect to my VPN

Help would really be appreciated

I am a decent geek but this is hairpulling

The Motorola NVG510 is a combo - router/modem in one unit from AT&T U-Verse

I also got a reply from my VPN and am copying and pasting it to you

Again - I will be indebted to you if you can help make this work - donation or whatever - I pay for my VPN network  for work and made a switch from Comcast to AT&T to cut back on finances by $75 a month and this new router/modem is totally new to me but you have seemed to helped others out accessing ports and getting them up and running after doing some reading on your forum so I joined - and will help whenever I can and will start as an active helper assisting if possible

I have downloaded your router capture screen if you need more info

here is the reply from my VPN: PS. There is no firmware update available for this unit at this time.

Hi,

you have to allow connections to TCP port 1723 thats right, but PPTP only uses that as a control channel. You need to allow protocol 47 also known as GRE as well. If the modem/router does NAT keep in mind that a good number of devices have problems with PPTP and only allow _one_ connection using PPTP at any given time. Also make sure that you have the latest firmware installed for your router.

Hope this helps.

cheers

You said you had another router plugged into the modem. Which router is that.

If you have 2 routers the first step is to do as my guide says :-)

OK so first lets test that port forwarding is working.

Setup a port forwarding rule to your computer and then run my port tester
http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester

Post a screen shot of the port forwarding page in the router and a screen shot of the rules of the port tester :-)

IP listen on was = 192.168.1.65

couldn't figure how to give you a screen shot but I did upload the screen shot of the router

I need the 2 screen shots.

Hit prtscn button on your keyboard. Open paint then go to edit then paste. Save it as a jpg.

When posting you will see an attach option at the bottom

Get me a screen of the results of the port tester and a screen shot of the port forwarding page in the router.

With both of those I can confirm your local IP and see if the rule is correct.

The screen shots both ports passed. So the port forwarding is working

So now lets try something else.

Lets find the DMZ in the router and enable and have it point to your computer. At that point every port should be open (This is just for testing) When it is see how your VPN responds.

Nat Default Server is another term for DMZ. See if you can find that page.

Looks like this router is already in my simple port forwarding program. But the goal now is to do the DMZ. This way if it works we know you just need to port forward more ports
