Help! port forwarding for xbox using 2 routers
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:37:03 AM »
Hey there, I'm trying to change the nat setting when playing COD:MW3 from strict to open, now my network setup is the THOMSON ST5x6v6 modem/router which then connects to a TP-Link TL-WR941N router, which then connects to my xbox. I have tried for 2 days straight to work out how to do this but still have not succeeded. I have followed both port forwarding tutorials for both devices that includes port forwarding the THOMSON to forward to the TP-LINK and then port forward to my xbox which I have given a static IP address. Despite this it is still on strict, any advice/help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Give this a read

The thomson may not have a DMZ, so do a port forwarding rule from ports 1000 to 65000 instead :-)

OK now we need to check if things are working.

First thing I want you to do is remove ll the port forwarding rules from the tp link.
Then make sure DMZ is off in the tp link as well.

Then make sure UPnP is enabled. UPnP is auto port forwarding and the xbox supports it.

Now lets make sure the 2 router setup is working to let ports through.
Setup a port forwarding rule that points to your computer, do port 1979
Then us my port tester
http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester

And post the results. If the port is open and passes then UPnP should take care of you and your good to go with the Xbox. If it still fails then we need to find out why.

Lets check if you have the bug in the thomson that a ton of others have.

Setup the same port forwarding rule to your computer but do it for UDP and let me know if it passes

So far everything looks good. I wonder if we need those lower ports added to the thomson as well. Right now we are doing 1000 to 65000 but the xbox needs 53 and 88.

Lets forward those rules in the thomson and point it to the tp link

I added those lower ports to both thomson and tp-link routers, but still getting a strict nat  maybe I have not done it correctly on the xbox end and thats why its not working?
P.S. I really appreciate your persistence

Remove the port forwarding rules from the tp link. And then post me a screen shot of the UPnP page in the TP link. After you do that reboot the xbox and tell me what it says for UPnP status

Does the xbox say UPnP is available?
