Mobile yes, wifi no
« on: November 05, 2011, 03:47:56 AM »
Strange problem, it's been working for a couple months. Last week, PC would not connect to xxxx.lorexddns.net remotely from my PC (on wifi) but my cell phone still worked (I believe on the wifi).  Then cell phone stopped connecting when using wifi but still connects when using 3G... Still get email alerts via alarm (sends when lights turn on/off).  I'm away so can't really reset DVR... but will be back next week.  Any thoughts?  The mobile connect via 3G but no when using wifi really confuses me!

When connecting by wifi are you able to browse any web pages?

If you can connect by your cell phone then wifi should work as well. Since your not on the same network as the DVR the wifi should be no different.

So the first test is to make sure when on wifi that the system can get on the internet properly.

yes, internet works fine.  A little background - I have an "away" apartment overseas for work with internet access and my own router (Netgear N600 same as at home).  Just wanted to be clear that the wi-fi is not on the same LAN as the DVR.  I use wi-fi to download maps, gmail... to the android phone.  That works fine (as does regular internet access from the laptop).  For the cell phone, I have xxx.lorexddns.net for the server and xxxx for the port.  If I have wi-fi turned off, everything works fine using 3G access and I can see the 4 cameras.  Turn on wifi and connect to the network, restart Lorex app on the cell phone and I get connect server fail (it keeps trying).  Go back to 3G, works fine...  Driving me nuts since the only difference is how the phone is making it's initial entry to the internet...

Connecting via the PC the connection just times out.  Tried connecting straight from the modem and bypassing the router... same result.  I'm going to try connecting the cell phone (3G) as a modem to the PC and see if that works.

FYI, I'm not using the default port #s.  I wonder whether my provider back home (comcast) started blocking the ports but if they did, I would not be able to connect with 3G...  the 3G but no wifi is really puzzling me!

Test the laptop out with the 3g as the modem. This test will help decide if the problem is on the laptop, or the ISP your connected to right now.

PM me your lorex DDNS name and I will see if I can get the login page. If I can then the problem is most likely the ISP your wifi is hooked up to. Which would be odd, but it looks that way so far.

the wifi goes through a different ISP than the 3g. So that is the difference between the two.

Update in case anyone is following.  Tried the 3G teather (no luck).  Sent Shane the address and port, he can't log in either.  Will post an update when I can access the DVR to check but betting it's one of those "if you reboot, it will work again" issues.  Not much good however when you don't have immediate access to the DVR!

This might be a little silly, but there is an idea.

You know those plug in timers you can get for Christmas lights? Where it turns the power on and off at a timer during the day.
Get one of those for the dvr and router. Have them turn off and on once a day for 30 sec's. lol

Silly I know, but an automatic way to reboot the devices as you travel.

Solved (not really, working is a better description).  I set up the DVR to reboot every Sunday morning.  Tried again today and like magic, it works again.  The techie in me however is not happy not understanding what went on with the mobile working and the internet not but I am putting it in the same category of the MS "blue screen of death"...  Reboot and move on...

Here's a few lessons learned from my experience over a couple months for those that are interested:
1.  Really does not play well with IE 64 bit, be sure to use the 32 bit version.
2.  Even in 32 bit, I have to use compatibility mode (click the broken page).
3.  Found that InPrivate browsing, 32 bit, compatibility mode works best for me.
4.  For those of you away from your dvr a lot, use the auto reboot function.  Save me this trip.  When I return home, mine is being switched to daily instead of weekly.

I never bothered with Lorex Client 10.  Any comments if that is more reliable then using I.E.?
