Minecraft server problem
« on: November 04, 2011, 07:29:01 AM »
Hi Shane,  Thanks again for helping me with my port forwarding problems with my two routers.  I go them to work fine yesterday, but right after you closed my post I came across another problem.

I cannot get anyone to join my sons Minecraft server.  See attached error.  I read about doing an open port test and so I did one and it read could not see your service on xx.xx.xxx.xxx:25565  Reason: connection timed out

Can you help with Mincecraft server issues?  Not sure.

Thanks Shane!!!!! :cheesy:  You are the best!!

When you connect to your server you need to use the local IP.
When someone out side your network connects they need to use your internet ip

The reason you cant use your internet IP as well is because your routers dont like reverse nat.

Thanks Shane, we can log on fine by logging on using "localhost" but no one outside our home can log on using the external IP:25565

According to Minecraft site, I should be able to log on using that same address.  I am more conserned about others being able to log on.

Any reason why I get the error when running an open port test?

Minecraft doesn't accept the connection attempt from the website, so the test fails no matter what.

If my port tester says it is open then it is open. You should make sure you dont have any firewall software blocking the server as well

so i did the test and nothing happens.  What does that mean?  Maybe I should just buy a new router replace my two and just have one??  And then start over?  How do I make sure it is reverse Nat compatible?

So new update.

I disabled my windows firewall and now the open port test works fine.  I used a different port test that yours.  I did yours but it never seems to tell me anything.  It just stays at listening.......

I tried to log on to minecraft and it has a new error of just failure.

Minecraft seems to know me well...... :cheesy:  LOL

When you tried my port tester you should have seen the port tester page on the site load in the program, if it didnt load the site might have been down. been doing updates :-)

Good to hear minecraft is working for you

OK, so I got the server to work and others can join my sons game just fine.

Last two questions, I swear!!!

For others to join he has to give our IP:25565, but I see others that give a name:25565.  Is there a seperate way to make a name that enters as your IP?  Not sure how others are giving connection addresses that do not include the actual IP address in the name.  I really dont want him giving out my External IP address.  Or does it really matter?

And the last question is about my firewall.  The only way others can join the server is if my firewall is turned off.  Is there a way to leave it on and allow specific people to enter only?  I dont want my 12 year old son having to turn off and on my firewall.

Thanks Shane!!!!! :cheesy:

For the IP name I dont know, I do know minecraft supports it, you will need to check on that.

For the firewall just make sure to add the game exe's to the firewall allow list and you should be fine

Now you are just making me look bad...LOL

I added Minecraft to the allow section, but it still blocks it.  I have to shut down the Firewall still before others can join server.

I even went back and added the Minecraft server.exe.

I have both "Home/work (private)" and "Public" checked.

I did an open port test and it fails while Firewall is running and is fine when Firewall is closed down.  The open port test I use is Canyouseeme.org
