No remote access to local network, Huawei B260a modem/router
« on: October 27, 2011, 02:36:45 PM »
Hi,

Similar to a few other threads on this forum I've problems accessing my network from the internet. I have a Huawei 3G modem with built in router. On the inside I've got a NAS (LG) with ftp server running and an IP camera, among other things. Earlier, at some occations, I have been able to access both ftp and the camera from the internet. It wasn't very stable though. Now, it never works. I've been working the port forwarding settings back and forth to the best of my knowledge. I'm no expert but not a complete novice either, I think.

Besides trying to access above mentioned services I've also tried pinging the wan port, without any response. I have no problem accessing the ftp server and the camera from a unit inside of the router. I have checked that the ip address om my machine as seen on http://www.pcwintech.com/myip matches what is listed in the router.

Screenshots of the seetings in the router attached. The camera setup is not included (and no port forwarding rules in the attached pics) since I just reset the router and all rules was cleared out. Neither remote ping or ftp works with the attached setting though. Internal ping and ftp works fine.

Any help greatly appreciated - about to give in...

Thanks in advance!

Does your router have a firewall settings page? If so can you post a screen shot?

Thanks for reply; screenshots attached. Earlier I've tried with firewall completely turned off as well.

When was the last time you reboot the router?

Make sure DMZ is off as well.

Also can you confirm the port forwarding rules are pointing to the correct IP's and they haven't changed on the devices? (If you have static IPs it wont be a problem)

So far everything looks good, so covering all the bases before I say it might be the router or the ISP blocking ports

DMZ is disabled

IP is correct. I use static addresses for all stationary units on the network. Laptops and phones have dynamic addresses.

I started a web server on the NAS and I actually could access it from the internet for a while 30 minutes ago! Now it doesn't work anymore :( And when I could access it, I still could not connect to the ftp server or ping the router. There is a "Remote management" option in the router which I guess should allow remote access to the router settings web page. I opened that up to test it, and then I reached the web server on the NAS. I had port 80 forwarded to the NAS at the time. Then I removed that port forwarding, and then got no response when trying to browse to my external IP. I put back the port forwarding, and then it worked again. I removed the remote management, and it still worked. Now it does not work, and I don't know why... Regardless of if remote mgmnt is enabled or disabled.

remote mgmnt setting page attached.

I sent a mail to the ISP (telenor, sweden) two days ago, still no resonse.

Sounds like it is the router that is malfunctioning. If your ISP was blocking ports you never would have connected even once.

The fact that it works then stops means it is the router.

OK, thanks for your help; I'll contact the ISP for support.

Cheers

After more than in an hour in support call (most of which just waiting for somebody to talk to), I don't know much more. The call got disconnected before we ended :(. The support guy talked a bit about that I should have a static IP address, and that their firewall blocks certain ports. It was when I asked which that the call got disconnected... :(

A bit of googling revealed that telenor has different APN:s, with some of them not suitable for remote access. The service I have is a mobile broadband, btw. Not sure if that is at all important.

What confuses me a bit now is that using http://canyouseeme.org/, I can confirm that port 21 and 80 are both open from the outside. I can still not connect with ftp though.

Another confusing thing is that I can access the webserver from my Desire HD, but when I set up the Desire HD as a WLAN hotspot and connect to this hotspot with my laptop, I cannot access the webserver from my laptop. I don't know what would make me more confused than what I am now... :(

Now I'll try putting the SIM into another modem/router of the same make and model, and see if it makes a difference. It's from another operator though, so I suspect it might not accept this SIM :(.

So the ISP does block some ports.

When I go to your IP I get a webpage

"User Web Service started"

So for right now it works and other times it doesnt.

SO a couple of things, try a different modem and also call the ISP back and find out what ports they do block

I realized that I could actually set the APN in the modem, and found on another web page that telenor has the following APNs (at least):
Telenor (publik) - internet.telenor.se
Telenor (publik) - public.telenor.se
Telenor (publik) - services.telenor.se
Telenor (publik) - static.telenor.se
Telenor - bredband.telenor.se

My original setting was internet.telenor.se. The only other one that worked was services.telenor.se; for the others, the modem would not be accepted by the network. I also read that you have to pay extra for static IP, for example, which is probably why I was not accepted.

When using services.telenor.se it seems I got placed behind a second internal telenor not; the IP shown in my modem is not the same as seen on web pages revealing ip addresses. So I'm back on internet.telenor.se and will try the other modem now.

as suspected, the other modem did not accept the telenor sim :( No progress there.

I'm back at the spot where port 80 works, but nothing else. What if I setup ftp to use port 80 instead - should that work? Not that it solves my problems, but just to check that it is really the ISP that blocks ports.
