Filezilla (FTP Client) - how to port forward
« on: September 25, 2011, 03:31:13 PM »
hi shane

got another problem. i have a Actiontec MI424WR Rev D (Verizon Firmware). i couldn't find a profile for this program but i did find a profile for "FTP". i went thru all the steps and the ports still fail for filezilla. i also have utorrent as a profile along with it but that passes. attached is the screenshots when trying to update the router. the reason why i wanna port forward my filezilla is cause even since getting this new router i've been experiencing slow speeds on that program. i am using it to connect to my seedbox. thanks in advance.

also i notice while updating router it brings this window up:

input error:

Conflicting Port Forwarding Rules: The Application service's ports conflict with an existing port forwarding rule offering Application service.

An FTP client shouldn't need any port forwarding. An FTP server would, but not a client. The client is connecting to the server, the server isnt connecting to the client

If your getting slow speeds with your FTP client try switching passive mode in the ftp client. Is passive mode on? Then turn it off, is it off? Then turn it on. This can help.

Also make sure to turn the firewall off in the router, that could get in the way as well

hi shane

oh ok.

turned off passive mode and switched it back on.

but isn't turning off my Verizon router gonna interfere with the TV programming or other services? if not can you by any chance tell me how i can shut it off? idk how.

thanks in advance.

also forgot to mention that i'm getting around in the 200's-300's kb/s in uploading and the downloading speeds vary greatly. usually higher than upload speed.

i just don't understand why i can't get the same or better speeds as i had with a cable connection. The Fios Verizon guy said i'd get better speeds than cable with FIOS.

Just go to the firewall page in the router and put it to disable, it wont hurt anything.
Look at #3 on this page for a picture of what it might look like.
http://www.pcwintech.com/common-problems-fixes-port-forwarding

Keep in mind when it comes to speeds it really matters on the ISP. I had an ISP that HATED people actually using their connection. And would throttle heavily if you used your connection to much. My new ISP doesn't throttle at all and I get what I pay for.

Some ISPs may not throttle the download, but it cost and ISP more for upload and they may throttle upload.
But this is only an idea. I have no idea if Verizon throttles at all.

ok gotcha. did that and i am still getting slow speeds. however i found a firewall and router configuration wizard built in filezilla. i keep failing the test tho. are you familiar with filezilla and that wizard? let me know. this should solve my problem if i can pass the test.

Turn off passive mode, put on active mode and then set the ports to what you have port forwarded

Now Im confused lol

OK lets start over.
You have a seedbox. If it at your location or somewhere else?
Your FTP are you using it at home to connect to the seedbox or when your outside your home?

my bad, shane.

yeah i have a seedbox and it's located somewhere else. i believe its located in London if i recall.

i am using it while at home. i recently found a app for my Android phone to interact with my rtorrent on my seedbox when away at home. still trying to figure out how to use it tho. i also have a home client utorrent to connect to smaller size torrents. i port forwarded that in the last discussion we had. i use the FTP client Filezilla to upload files to the seedbox and to download files i downloaded on seedbox and transfer them to my home computer so that i can burn them to disc for example.

hp[e that helps.

Any chance that the slower speed may just be from the location of the speedbox? The route the connection takes makes a huge difference.

With your cable internet you got faster speeds (Different route since its a different provider). With Verizon your getting slower speeds. It could be the route it is taking and there may not be anything you can do about it.

The best thing to do is test.

Setup a test account and folder on your speedbox (I don't need access to anything but an empty folder) and email me the login info. I will upload and download a test file to it and see what speeds I get then we can compare. I'm not on Verizon.

hey shane

hmm maybe. i still have the same seedbox service i had when i had cable. but i am getting faster speeds in utorrent and regular downloading just not on Filezillla.

how would i go about setting up a test account. i think i know how to make a folder on my seedbox for you to test on. let me know exactly how i would go about getting this done for you if you can. i will email you the login info soon after.

thanks shane so far. you're doing a great job with helping out your readers :)

Dont know, never used a seedbox lol
You should have a user manager, create a user and give it access to only the new folder you make. I don't want access to anything else. Just an empty folder to do some speed tests with.

I really thing it is just the router the connection takes from Verizon. They must not have as good a pipe that goes to Europe. If all your other speeds have gotten better while this one got worse makes me think that.

You could always do a trace route and see what kind of response times you get.
