[Block Sites] D.Link DIR-635
« on: August 27, 2011, 12:24:21 PM »
Hello again Shane!

I don't know if this is the right spot to post a theard like this, but move it if it's not right!

I'v been thinking alot and looking alot how to block sites on a router or something like that.

My Family is currently going to stop download Movies, Games, music and such like that. We wanna go the old school way! hehe

So i'm the only one who understands those things here in my family so i'v been looking around and i only found that you can block via Hosts File..

So i wounder if there is a way to block some sites via the Router or so?
i most wanna block piratebay, tankafetast and some more Torrent downloading sites.

so please, any idéas ? :)

Thanks!

~Hyldran0~

Sure can, your router has the option for it
http://www.pcwintech.com/files/screenshots/d-link-dir-635/021.png

So in one rule you can put facebook.com as an example.

What ever you put in there the router will look at when the person goes to a page. So in this case anything with facebook.com would be blocked. Notice I didn't put www.

If I had put www.facebook.com then only www.facebook.com would be blocked and not apps.facebook.com

You get the idea. I only use facebook.com as an example because a lot of my business customers have be block that site from their users during work hours lol

So what if you just put facebook in and no .com? then anything with the word facebook would be blocked, like myfacebookpage.com would be blocked because the word facebook is in it. So to really block a main site and not a ton of others by accident then doing a normal facebook.com does the trick :-)

Crap didn't read that, on most routers that is to block pages, not allow them and block all others! lol

Let me see if there is another page.

Dont know my self, I don't have that model. My linksys or netgear is far simpler lol

I did find this for you.

Quote
The Access Control section allows you to control access in and out of devices on your network. Use this feature as Parental Controls to only grant access to approved sites, limit web access based on time or dates, and/or block access from applications such as peer-to-peer utilities or games.

Enable
By default, the Access Control feature is disabled. If you need Access Control, check this option.

Note: When Access Control is disabled, every device on the LAN has unrestricted access to the Internet. However, if you enable Access Control, Internet access is restricted for those devices that have an Access Control Policy configured for them. All other devices have unrestricted access to the Internet.
Policy Wizard
The Policy Wizard guides you through the steps of defining each access control policy. A policy is the "Who, What, When, and How" of access control -- whose computer will be affected by the control, what internet addresses are controlled, when will the control be in effect, and how is the control implemented. You can define multiple policies. The Policy Wizard starts when you click the button below and also when you edit an existing policy.

    Add Policy
Click this button to start creating a new access control policy.

Policy Table
This section shows the currently defined access control policies. A policy can be changed by clicking the Edit icon, or deleted by clicking the Delete icon. When you click the Edit icon, the Policy Wizard starts and guides you through the process of changing a policy. You can enable or disable specific policies in the list by clicking the "Enable" checkbox.

You would have a much easier time with a netgear or linksys router to block those sites
