port forwarding on a d-link dsl 2780 router help please
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:15:29 AM »
hi i really need help in very simple terms as i am not very technical lol, i need to open ports for black ops on my ps3, but have no clue as to do it on my dsl 2780 router, what i did recently was changed my router from a wpa key to a wep key so i could hook my ds up to the internet, then found i had a nat type of moderate on black ops  and playing online was really difficult, so i changed it back again, but i was still on moderate, this weekend i took my ps3 round to my boyfriends house and both our ps3's were on open , i have been in touch with my provider to try and get help from them, with epic fail they didnt want to know as we thought it might of been the router as during the week before my change i was on open and only at weekends when my bf stays we went on moderate,  and when he left i went bk onto open, now am always on moderate or if anyone knows what i need to do to get my ps3 bk on open if port forwarding isnt the way please can you help me  :cheesy: thank you

The wireless wont have anything to do with it.

In the router make sure UPnP is turned on. UPnP is auto port forwarding, and with it the PS3 can open the ports it needs automatically.

Also lets make sure your not behind 2 routers. Sometimes the modem from the ISP is also a router.
So log into the D-Link, find the status page that shows the WAN or Internet IP.

Does that IP match the IP on this page?

Let me know how it goes

OK so far so good.

Now log into your PS3 and check its nat status. Is it nat 2 or 3?

If it says NAT2 then it is open and working like it should. Nat 3 is the one you don't want

Yet your game doesn't say open? Load your game and check its nat status now.

It could be UPnP in the router isnt working right. So here is what we can try.

DMZ is a open every port rule.

SO here is what I want you to do.

1. Log into the PS3, find its network info. Write down its IP address.
2. Log into the D-Link.
3. Find the DMZ page.
4. Enable DMZ, and for the IP put the IP you wrote down for the PS3. Then save the page.
5. Wait for it to finish saving, now power cycle the router.
6. Wait for the router and internet to come back online. Then try the game.

Now every port should be open to the PS3. IF all goes well the game should work

Let me know how it goes.

The problem looks like the UPnP in the router isn't working right.

If your boyfriend comes over with his PS3 it wont work as it is right now.

Normally with UPnP you can have both hooked up and working. But since UpNp isnt working you can see the problem.
You could always check for a firmware update for the router, perhaps they fixed UPnP in an update
