Can only open UDP ports, not TCP
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:43:32 AM »
I tried to open the port 6112 TCP for Warcraft 3, but when I open it, I'm still unable to host in that game and the port checker says its closed. I can open UDP ports just fine and can host without problems in games that require only UDP. My router is Thomson TG784.

a picture of the test:

First lets check the port forwarding rules :-)

Can you post the bottom part of the port forwarding page?

Also a common problem I have seen on those is #7 on here
http://www.pcwintech.com/common-problems-fixes-port-forwarding

So check that as well :-)

Lets go from there

Ok here's the page

Thats all there is right now because I haven't been able to open ports via the router website, they would just close in 3 minutes after opening them for some reason. I discovered only today that by using the Simple Port Forwarding program they will STAY open. But so far I've opened ports by right-clicking my router icon in Network Devices, Properties, Settings and added ports from there... that worked well and the rest of my ports are there

I checked the problem #7 and I'm sure its forwarded to the right IP address

Try adding some port ports, just for testing. say 1979 TCP & UDP then test it with the port teste app and see what happens.

Also what antivirus/firewall do you have installed?

OK so we can clearly see that UDP is making it yet any TCP ports are not.

Now we need to find out where the problem is. Your router or your computer?

Best way to do test that is with another computer.

Here is how.
With another system lets setup some port forwarding rules then test them.

Did TCP pass? If so then the problem is your computer.
Did the ports fail on the other machine? Then the problem is in the router

Well, unfortunately I don't have another PC to test it on..
but if its any help, I used to have same problem on my previous computer.
Although when I had the previous computer I also had another router, Thomson Speedtouch 780v6.
Then I got a new computer while still having the old router and I still had the TCP problem. Then I got a new router too and I'm still having the problem...

Old computer, old router, same problem.

This could be the router or your computer!

I haven't check avast lately, does the current one you have, have a firewall in it?
If not run my repair windows firewall tool from here
http://www.pcwintech.com/shanes-toolbox

If it isn't the router or your system it is always possible your ISP is blocking TCP. But I haven't heard of an ISP doing that. I have heard of plenty blocking ports, but not all of tcp!

Reason why it is possible it is the ISP is the fact that you have had 2 computers and 2 routers with the SAME problem. Whats the common factor? The ISP.

Ok, I found out my version of Avast doesn't have a firewall so I ran the firewall repair program but I still cant open TPC ports.

Going to be hard to pinpoint this with out another computer to test.
But lets see if it is a bug in the router.

I have seen a lot of bugs in the Thomson routers. Lets see if this trick will work for you as well.

Change the port forwarding rule to do ports 2000 to 65000 TCP.

This trick use to work with UDP when the ports wouldn't work. They have a lot of bugs in their intrusion detection. There is a command login trick to turn it off. But lets see if this trick will work first

Ok I opened 2000-65000 TCP and tested some ports in that gap but they still failed.

Without having another system to test with we are running out of tests.

Right now from all that has been done it is either 1 of 3 things.
1. Something has changed on your system and TCP is blocked
2. Have a bad router and it blocks TCP
3. Your ISP is blocking forwarding of TCP (Most likely)

Right now I say #3. You may need to call your ISP and ask them if they do any kind of port blocking. Who is your ISP perhaps I can Google them and find out :-)
