New to Port Forwarding
« on: July 10, 2011, 01:27:42 AM »
Hello! First time poster here. I been searching the web and I haven't found concrete evidence but this place seems to be the best to have my question answered.
I am using a ZyXEL PK5000Z Qwest modem/router (one and the same I believe) and I am trying to open port 5063 for Dungeon Fighter online. Otherwise it wont let me connect with others for parties unless very rarely. (Though this could be because of Nexon and not the modem itself)
Anyway, I followed the simple guild (Awesome by the way!) And was able to take care of it and the information is at the bottom. And I was able to party the first day I did that, which was yesterday. Today, I tried to join some friends and it blocked me as if I never port forwarded. So I looked under my modem's port forwarding and it was still there. But it acted like it wasn't.
Also, after some research I found that my computer isn't have a problem, but my modem/router is saying that port isn't open.
So the question is, how do I stop the modem from blocking it even though I opened the port?
Thank you for your time!

Have you double checked to make sure that the port forwarding rule is still pointing to the correct computer? Sometimes a router will give you a different IP address and if that happens then the port forwarding won't work correctly until you update the rules.

Possible your computer got a new IP from the modem. Thus the port forwarding rule is pointing to the wrong Ip now.

I have seen a few of the qwest modems have port forwarding stop working. Sometimes its a simple reboot of the modem and its good.

For now do a test on your system with my port tester
http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester

Post a screen shot of it. It wil also let me see you computers local IP.

Then log into the router, go to the port forwarding page, scroll to the bottom and take a screen shot.

This way I can check the rule as well

The IP address doesn't seem to have changed, as well as the rules are still in affect in the router menu.

I tired rebooting and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Here are the screenshots you requested:

(sorry for the late response, forgot how to make the paint images jpg instead of bmps)

In the port tester, choose the correct local IP to test on. It should be the 192.168 one. Let me know how it goes

Wow, I didn't even know it was on the wrong IP, or that you could change it.

Here is the correct screenshot then:

You have more than one network on your system is why.

Looks like the port is open and working

Yeah, says its working, but when I check it via a port checker online for router, it will say its closed.

And that's where the confusion comes in. Also tried using Hamachi to bypass this problem, but it still told me I was behind a firewall and couldn't party with my friend on Dungeon Fighter Online.

In order for any online port checker to work, something needs to be using the port to accept the connection.
If nothing is using the port it will fail no matter what.

What my port tester program does is open and listen on the port for incoming connections. So if it says it works then you know it does

Hamachi is what is giving you the extra IP on your system. Right now your ports are open. So something else is at play. Have you double check your firewall software?

Ahh I see, I guess I just didn't put 2 and 2 together for the 2nd IP problem.

Well, window automatic updates says it up to date, if that's what you mean. And I have it set to make an exception of DFO.

Since they use a peer-to-peer system, I am wondering if things are just messed up on their end. (which is very much plausible. Since I can party with some people, but not with alot of others.)

Lets put it this way. If the problem was on your end, you wouldn't be able to do a party with anyone.

The fact you can with some and not others shows that it is most likely on their end

well regardless, thank you very much for listening to my troubled request!

Good to have someone to talk to about this. I hope they fix there problem soon! (takes 2 weeks to get a reply on a support ticket, so that's doubtful)

Hope you have a great week!  :cheesy:

Actually, one last thing if it isn't too much trouble.

Is there a way, even if its their side, to find out how I am blocking others? So that when they try to join me or visa versa, I can use something to see what is preventing them or acting as my firewall against them.

If there isn't well, at least I asked.

Again, thank you for your help and your time!

If you try to connect to them and cant it is most likely them. If you host and they can connect then you know for sure it is them.

Let me know your happy and I will lock this thread.

Well, in the terms of the game with my friend,

When I send him an party invite, he doesn't receive it, and this actually happens with most people. But I can receive party invitations from him, and others.

After I accept his invite, it shows our character's portraits and with the words connecting over the other party member. Usually when it doesn't work, it does this for like, 10-20seconds, then says "You can not communicate with PlayerX because you are behind a firewall, need to update your network" (or something like that)

Now when we tried to use Hamachi to the computers bypass the router, (which we thought was the problem) I could ping him, no problem. He couldn't ping me unless I dropped my firewall (only did it for a moment as a test)

Back to the original question though, is there a way to check how he is connecting to my computer? Maybe he is connecting from a different port?
