Behind two routers, can't forward 7777
« on: June 30, 2011, 11:23:00 AM »

First off thanks to those who run this forum, this has got to be a serious project to be able to help all the people with these problems.

I'm trying to forward port 7777 for a games dedicated server (Terraria).  I've done this before, I do know how to forward a port properly, and I've done it.  The first router, a 2wire 3800-HGV has been put into DMZ Plus mode to allow all traffic through, and the second router, a Linksys e1000, has been forwarded correctly.

When I test the port online it's closed.

When I set up a static IP (in Windows 7 Home premium 64), I did get a pop-up when I applied it, in reference to the DNS server addresses I provided (see attachment).  Those addresses were provided to me by my ISP and even after saying yes to the pop up you'll see in the attachment, I still have internet connection, with no problems.

So, I'm stuck, and any help will be appreciated, thanks.

What is the local IP of the linksys?

if I look at the 2wire's router config, under connected devices, it's 192.168.1.71

The Linksys should be your default gateway and you have manually selected a different one. Either change your default gateway to the Linksys or change it to obtain your information automatically.

when I go to the command line and run ipconfig /all the default gateway is as you see it entered in the attachment, not the device IP that the 2wire router uses.

 I'll try it though, thanks

UPDATE:  I got another 'Are you sure you want to save this configuration' pop up when I changed the default gateway (see attached)

I was able to save the configuration, and port 7777 still remained closed.  I switched it back to what it was prior.

UPDATE:  If there's any more info I can provide to help figure this out, please let me know.  I don't want to post the attachment pic, but I have a screenshot of my ipconfig to share via PM

UPDATE:  I put the second router, the Linksys E1000 into DMZ mode, using the static IP as the DMZ address ... the port still tests as closed.  (edit:  I then changed it back)

Which leads me to believe something is wrong with how I'm setting up the static IP?   It tests as closed if I set up my adapter for Automatic IP, either way

Your using the wrong IP of the linksys.

It has 2 IP's. One LAN and the other WAN.
The 2wire page is showing you the WAN IP which you dont want to use for the gateway. You want to use the local IP.
Put your IP back to auto on your system and let it get an IP from the linksys.

Then open a command window and do ipconfig
The gateway will be the LAN IP of the linksys

I have a feeling we're using different terminology, because I'm confused ... I'm certain I've got something mixed up.

I had the default gateway set at the actual default gateway originally when I set my wireless adapter with a static IP.   It's 192.168.0.1

Even with that configuration I still have a closed port 7777

Just got off the phone with my ISP and found out I have to purchase blocks of 8 static IPs, I can't just set one.

So am I screwed having to pay extra to my ISP just to forward this port?

No your ISP doesnt understand, they think you are talking about a static internet IP. Not your local ones. Forget what they said

Best thing to do is start over. So lets walk through everything and get your working.

First step. Put your static IP to this info

ip: 192.168.0.250
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: either 192.168.0.1 or googles 8.8.8.8

Save that.

Now log into your linksys http://192.168.0.1
Go to the port forwarding page and setup the port forwarding rule to point to 192.168.0.250 make sure no other rules have the same port. And make sure DMZ is off.

Save the page.

Now try my port tester program
http://www.pcwintech.com/simple-port-tester

Does it say successful? then you done.

Does it fail? then we need to go into the wrie, remove any rules point to 777 and make sure DMZ is set to the WAN ip of the linksys (The WAN ip is the internet IP the linksys gets from the 2wire)

Lets see how it goes

Alright, I followed the instructions, still got failures

I left the alternate DNS server field blank, do I need something there?

I think you're saying I need to go into the 2wire router config?  I know for sure there's no rules pointing to anything and that the DMZ is set (see attached)

If I try and enter a different IP address into the Applications, Pinholes and DMZ (aka, myheadache2.jpg) I do not get a DMZ option.

OK now lets confirm that is the right WAN Ip of the linksys.

Log into the linksys http://192.168.0.1
Go to the status page. There you will see internet IP:
What does it show?

 Confirmed as 192.168.1.71

I tried entering the internal static ip 192.168.0.250 and forwarded port 7777 in the 2wire, still closed.

UPDATE:  See attached, if it's of any help

You dont put that rule into the 2wire.

For now try this. Turn off the DMZ in the 2wire.
Then setup a port forwarding rule for 7777 in the 2iwre and have it point to 192.168.1.71

After that I want you to post 3 screen shots.

1. The port forwarding rule in the 2 wire.
2. the port forwarding page in the linksys
3. a command window on the laptop showing IPconfig

With those I should be able to check everything

 Sorry for the hassle

See attached ... still got failures

I did notice that on the Linksys status page, the default gateway is different than the one I'm using in the wireless adapter static IP

I also noticed that it says Media Disconnected in ipconfig, which I don't understand, since my internet is working fine and the wireless adapter is plugged in

I have seen a bug in that router before.

Try this, remove the rule on the port range page in the linksys. And instead put the rule on the single port page instead.

Let me know how that goes
