Help With Strict Nat-Zyxel P-660HW D1 V2 DSL Router
« on: June 02, 2011, 12:50:17 AM »
Thanks for taking your time and consideration reading this.

I have a Zyxel P-660HW D1 V2 DSL Router

This router is wired to a computer in my living area.

I have an computer in my office. Attached to it is a wireless adapter receiving a signal from the router.
In my office I have an Xbox 360. I went with the cheapest method of being able to connect to Xbox Live.

I have a Cat 5 (Ethernet Cable) running from the console into my desktop in my office.

The two connections are bridged.

I can connect to Live just fine, however. I seem to have a Strict Nat. Thus leading to connection issues, as well as a slower connection.

Apparently I need to open some ports on my routers settings. Though I've opened them. I've restarted the router. I've done everything I know. And still I end up with a Strict Nat.

I'm open to all different solutions. If it comes down to it. Team Viewer (Remote Desktop Control) is an option as well.

Thank you again-

Have you checked to make sure you aren't behind a second router? What you need to do is log into your router and look at the WAN IP address and check to make sure that is the same as your Internet Address (http://www.pcwintech.com/myip). If that is different then let me know and we can move on to make sure that you have the settings correct.

If I read it right, you have the xbox hooked to your system and getting the internet that way?
Why not have the xbox hooked right to the router? If it is hooked to your system, that is the problem

I don't have a second router. The reason behind it not being plugged directly into the router is because of it's location. It's plugged into my desktop. I can connect to xbox live fine. I just always get a Strict Nat. Theres no other way around this?? :(

When you have your xbox hooked to your computer, you are having your computer act as a router. And so the ports are not being sent through.

To get this to work you need to have the xbox hooked to the router properly
Wireless card for the xbox might have to be the way, or a longer cord :-)

Considering the Xbox Wireless Adapter is around $100 I think I'll just go out and buy a 60-75ft Ethernet cable. :\ So for asking again but there isn't any other options?

I changed my set up at home to reflect what you had and I was able to have an open NAT so the problem could be your configuration.

You can order a long cable dang cheap online though.

$17 for 100 ft :-)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119219&cm_re=100ft_network_cable-_-12-119-219-_-Product

You will have to try and get your windows to pass the connection through. There are some things you can try. But the far simplest thing is a cable to the router

I personally never setup connections like that. So off the top of my head it shouldn't work. But sounds like I am wrong :-)
Nothing wrong with that, means I get to learn something new  :cheesy:

So here is what we will do. Since you did a bridge and not internet connection sharing, then your xbox should have got an IP from the router.

Easiest thing with a router and the xbox is to make sure UPnP is enabled in the router.

Go check that and let me know

I took my Xbox 360 and plugged it into my laptop and switched the laptop to wireless and bridged the connection and already had the port forwarding rules set up in my router. The IP stayed the same on the console so the port forwarding rules worked the same and my connection (NAT part) was perfect (Open). I did have some lag after I made the change but that was because my wireless connection was now handling the laptop and console.

The bridged connection is why you are seeing a slower Xbox Live experience, it isn't the Strict NAT. Strict NAT has no bearing on the quality of your connection, it does however affect your ability to successfully connect and it also affects your voice communication.

You'd be better off with a cable because it will give you a dedicated connection to the router and will also be faster and more stable. The NAT problem though could very likely persist.

I was thinking internet connection sharing, and that's why I said it wouldn't work lol. I need more coffee :-)

Good to go as your working now, or good to go UPnP is enabled?

Yeah, ICS wouldn't work right (not without a lot of configuration). I'd personally never tried this set up either, so I learned something new as well. The connection isn't "good", but it does work if you don't want to run cables and have a system with more than one NIC (like a laptop).

The connection in my games is completely fine. I'm not worrying about that at all. I may have mistakenly stated it wasn't good. The only issue is me not being to connect to friends games, parties, or chats.
