Have you tried the drive in another system or in another SATA port? Also try using a different SATA cable and make sure you have the correct drivers installed. Please be specific in telling me which of those you have tried so we can try to eliminate different areas.

Try it in another machine if you can.

I have also seen drives give problems because windows sets their DMA to high.

IN the device manager under the IDE controllers you can see what DMA the drive is using.
I had a dvd drive that windows kept putting at DMA 4 and the drive wouldn't work right. I forced it to use DMA 2 like most drives use and it worked perfectly.

So it could be something off like that as well.

Did you check the DMA in the device manager?

Is your old drive working fine? or are both messing up?

So only the new drive is causing problems. That helps determine if it is the drive it self. Any chance you have another machine you can hook the new drive to to test? If it still fails in a different system then it is confirmed a bad drive.

If works just fine then we need to check some settings in your system

Best test is to try another system. So if you could do that then it would help determine where the problem is

Test by doing the same things that fail on yours.

If it work on his then we know to look at your system.
If it also fails on his then you have a bad drive
