CPU Busy
« on: January 28, 2011, 03:31:07 AM »
I had an open item on this topic (started at the end of November) -- for some reason it got closed. At any rate the problem is fixed so I thought I would let everyone know what it was. I eliminated all Toshiba glut ware and MS Live and MSN junk --- that sounds like a quick thing but if you're only blowing up one thing at a time and rebooting and then waiting for a day to see if it is fixed  t'aint so quick. The final removal was Skype. I know a lot of people use this with no problem but my computer use of that laptop may be unusual. I log into one site with 4 IE tabs and stay there all day (over 12 hours). After 3 or 4 hours I would begin to see cpu busy (all IE) getting busier and busier until finally 100% and everything just ground to a halt. Everytime I rebooted I would bring up Task Manager and close Skype since I wasn't using it but apparently even though it is not active it is doing something to get IE busy and not releasing  whatever it is doing. Anyhow, thanks for all the ideas/help -- finally fixed.

I'm sorry I missed your old post. Somehow I must have missed it.

I do know skype hooks itself to IE. You can remove the hook to stop the cpu from climbing if a user needs to.

Glad you found the problem

Great job with the trouble shooting. You're definitely right that it can be a long a tedious process but you did it the correct way. You tried things one at a time till you figured out the problem.

I wonder if a new version of Skype or using Firefox would exhibit the same problem? It doesn't really matter since you said that you don't use it anyways.

Also, sorry that your thread got locked. The forum auto locks threads without any activity after about 30 days. If you have a thread locked on you and you need to make another post, you can always just send Shane or I a message and we will unlock it for you.
