AMD not connecting
« on: December 27, 2010, 02:08:19 PM »
This has happened before and sometimes it just magically goes away but this time it doesn't seem to want to work. Two things. I did a restart on the AMD. After the restart it says it is not connected to anything - network available but not connected. I can get it to connect to the Trendnet by clicking on the Trendnet and telling it to connect. So that is the first thing -- why does it do that? Why doesn't it just come up and connect?  I don't have to monkey around with the other systems - something wrong with the setup on the AMD. Second thing. After I connect to the Trendnet I can get to the Internet but nothing else. There are two PCs, a printer and 2 DVRs on the other side of the Trendnet but I can't get to them and don't know how to force it. I ran the 'network repair' utility on both the AMD and the Gateway (that's the one I want to get to) and it didn't help. Suggestions?

I take it AMD is the name of the system your referring to :-)

Is it connecting by wireless? If so we may need to clean up the wireless networks it has stored.
Also if you have multiple connections we need to tell windows what order to use those connections

Yes it is a wireless connection to the TrendNet. It is the only connection. Where do I look to see stored networks?

Go to manage wireless networks. You should see the list of them there. Delete them all.

Sometimes they get corrupt. So delete them and then reconnect to the network

Manage wireless networks shows none. LOL Perhaps that might be the problem? But I don't know how or what to add.

When you go to the manage wireless networks you should see the list of networks it has stored with passwords.

Post a screen shot of the window your looking at so I can make sure your in the right spot

That would explain why it doesn't auto connect.
When you have it connect are you putting the check mark on to remember that network?

The only thing I connect to is to the Trendnet and don't remember being offered the opportunity to remember it. Plus, even though I get connected to the Trendnet, I don't get connected to the other 'stuff' on the other side of the Trendnet -- only can go to Internet -- not the other PCs.

What is the local IP on the AMD machine, and what is a local IP from one of the other computers?

I suspect that I have no clue. I went to "whatismyip" and it says IP is 207.119.174.84 cool enuf. Went to the Gateway and whatismyip says exactly the same -- went to Toshiba -- same thing. So clearly that is not what youare looking for and I sure don't undertstand (of course we already knew that) -- evidently the IP address is the address for my house and no more. The local IP remains a mystery which I have every reason to believe you will clear up for me.   :shy:  Not shy -- blushing

You can find your local IP by going to the run command in the start menu and typing "cmd" which will bring up a command prompt.  From there you just type "ipconfig /all" and tell us what your local IPv4 address is.  Make sure you do that while connected wirelessly.

As far as not being able to see the other computers I suspect it is that you are on a different "workgroup".  What are the operating systems on the computers you are wanting to be able to see?  Also, can the other computers see your AMD?

I gotta be doing something wrong. Typed in ipconfig /all (btw, it doesn't like it without the space) - it throws up a little black box with some writing in it but then it's gone in a flash -- way too fast for me to even get a decent look at it. Should it have like a /P after it or something? I got the same result on the Gateway.

LOL -- I forgot the other questions so it will be a second reply. Ah yes one of the questions was "can the other PCs see the AMD?".  Nope. However, the Toshiba (sitting 10 inches away from the AMD sees the other PCs and sees the AMD. The AMD sees the Toshiba but when I tried to connect to it from the AMD the Toshiba wanted a password. I suspect that the AMD and Toshiba "see" each other only because they are connecting wirelesssly to themselves rather than through the Trendnet.

Now I'll go back and see if I answered all your questions.
