Help with port forwarding
« on: November 30, 2010, 11:39:29 AM »
hi,

I've been having problems with downloading through torrent clients lately - I've been getting a "An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions" error when downloading | Windows 7 Pro x64

Some people mentioned that port forwarding might help, tried doing so through Windows Firewall but nothing changed;

then people directed me to this site and your program, Simple Port Forwarding. I was told to visit your forum for help if I still couldn't manage to get it working

uTorrent 2.2; my router is "ZTE - ZXDSL 531B" with ZTE Firmware

edit: Also, uTorrent would occasionally manage to start downloading once in a good while (for example once a week) but this has not happened in the past week or two

I did a little research and port forwarding doesn't have anything to do with this error. This error has to do with the system itself.

So lets get it fixed :-)

First what the error means from Microsoft
Quote
Permission denied.

An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. An example is using a broadcast address for sendto without broadcast permission being set using setsockopt(SO_BROADCAST).

Another possible reason for the WSAEACCES error is that when the bind function is called (on Windows NT 4.0 with SP4 and later), another application, service, or kernel mode driver is bound to the same address with exclusive access. Such exclusive access is a new feature of Windows NT 4.0 with SP4 and later, and is implemented by using the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option.

So from the sounds of it something else is using the port utorrent wants. Or keeping utorrent from using the port.

So 2 things to try first.
1. Change the port in which utorrent is using in the settings.
2. make sure you are running utorrent as administrator.

See if you still get the error after that

Thanks for the fast reply!

Unfortunately both of these don't work. I've changed the port countless times before and it never seemed to do anything. I only found out about running it as an administrator today (lol) but that doesn't work, either (nothing changes).

I tried Simple Port Forwarding again and it doesn't seem to recognise my router's password when I try to update it with a random port I want to use (and it was the username and password given by my ISP).

You will need port forwarding to get better download speeds. But we can worry about that after we fix this error

What antivirus/firewall program do you have installed?

Windows Firewall, avast! Free Antivirus (5.0.677, latest database) and I also have MalwareBytes' Pro (1.46, latest database). Disabling avast and MalwareBytes' doesn't seem to affect my connection, but I haven't tried the firewall recently. I will now.

SHouldnt be a windows firewall problem.

I have done a little more research and have a few more things to try.

1st.
start | settings | admin tools | services -> stop and disable internet connection sharing service.

2nd.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195445

And then reboot. Oh and of course make sure you have all the current windows updates. Some KB articles show a bug in Windows and some updates fix it. Also keep doing windows updates till it says no updates are left

I have some work to do and I won't be able to reboot now, so I'll try the first suggestion tomorrow. That KB update you posted is about Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 systems though, so I'm pretty sure it's not that. I've installed everything Windows Update has to offer, optional, recommended and critical, so I really don't think it has to do with any of that.

Thanks for your input so far

I know that kb is older, but it still  holds true for the newer ones as well

Let me know how things go tomorrow and we will go from there.

I just finished and decided to check it out.

When I run it from Control Panel it only says "Manual" and when I attempt to start it, Internet Connection Sharing service then automatically stops. When I run it from task manager and click on services, it says "stopped".

Before I went into Control Panel and Services (i.e. I went into task manager before that) the service was stopped. So I guess I didn't change anything. :undecided:

Thats good, we wanted it stopped.

Also when was the last time you rebooted the system?

OK lets keep trying a few things :-)
The problem you are getting is not normal. So something is out of whack.

So lets make sure all the system files are good.
Open a command window and then put in sfc /scannow

We can also try the Winsock repair fix from MS. Wont hurt to run so lets see if it helps
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259
(Since 7 is a newer version of vista this tool will still work)

And of course after these you need to reboot.
Lets see how this goes

(I am also going to move this thread to General Networking forum)

There has been downloading! It's like one of the occasional times it manages to work I mentioned in the first post. I haven't done anything different except rebooting twice in a row since MBAM had to update to 1.5.

The SFC scan is currently running but I'm not going to try the WinSock fix just yet. Next post will contain the results of the SFC scan.
