Problem with network computer
« on: October 21, 2010, 05:37:26 AM »
I opened the ports needed on my server computer (physically attached to the router) with SPF.  Everything went fine, ports are open.  But when I try to use my LAN (I have a small three computer network) computer, the ports are not open and I am unable to use uTorrent.  Should I have SPF on every computer in my network? Should I have uTorrent on my server computer?  I've been working on this for days with no success.  I am now obsessed with opening the stupid ports.  I dream (nightmares) about IP addresses chasing me with machetes.  Can anyone help this computer challenged newbe to open my ports before I hit myself in the head with a hammer?
Sincerely,
guy with hammer stuck in his head

PS - and no, Forest Gump does not know how to send a screen shot

You can run SPF on each computer.   :cheesy:

Each computer has its own IP address. So we have to make sure their local IPs are in the rules.
Also the port tester in my program opens and listens on the computer it is running on. So running SPF on each computer will work a lot smoother for you.

And in case your one of the many buyers of my pro version, you DO NOT need to by a copy for each computer. Just buy 1 and enjoy the program :-)

If you have still have trouble just let me know

Mr. Shane, thank you for the lifeline.  I want to run uTorrent on a laptop that is connected to my wireless network.  My local IP on the main computer is 192.168.1.10.  My local IP on the laptop is 192.168.1.4.  My understanding (or lack there of) was simply to open the port on my main computer and that would handle it. I thought the idea was to "point" the port forward rule from the main computer to other computers on the network. As stated, the port on my main computer is open according to the port tester.  Stay with me brother .  How would setting up my laptop be different from my main computer?  In what way would the IP addresses be different?  Am I pointing the port forward rule from my main computer to my laptop?  Or is it the other way around?  I know my ignorance is overwhelming, but this is something I really want to accomplish.  Do you think purchasing the Pro version would take care of my problems (I'm going to buy it anyway)?  You are my last hope before I go into a deep computer depression.  Send directions on how to send you screen shots if that will help.
Thanks a million

You don't have to buy the pro version. I would never force that on my users. Simply not who I am

I think this right here will explain it nice and clear to you

Mr. Shane Sir: I did not mean to imply anything, I am going to buy the Pro version.  I can tell from your posts that you would never solicit anything from your users.  I've read the post you sent me already.  I kinda get it.  Actually, I've read a good deal of the help guides and forums.  I'm having trouble generating a mental flow chart.
For instance, my main computer's IP is 192.168.1.10.  Is this the IP address I should use when creating a port forward rule on my main computer?  My laptop's IP is 192.168.4.  Is this the IP I should use when creating a port forwarding rule on my laptop?  I'm sorry to be a pain.
Thanks for everything

"Shane, come back Shane." I'm sorry, couldn't resist it.  Ok, port forwarding problem child is making a little progress.  I set up my ports with the correct IP addresses.  I almost cried when I got the following error message when checking the port "A firewall/router is blocking network access", "please open port".  What kind of firewall/router mess might I have to clean up?  I have a Netgear 834b v2 N router.  I won't give up my quest for the holy open port (unless you do, of course).  My router connected computer is XP, my laptop is vista, could this be a problem?
Once again, I apologize for being a nuisance.

Are you running my port tester? (Step 7 in simple port forwarding)

Yes sir I am.  Step seven is where the port fails.  Mr. Shane, does SPF take care of the port forwarding/port triggering setup within my router?
Recap:
1.  Setup what is listed as a static IP on my server before I downloaded SPF (ill advised, I know)
2.  I opened the port needed on my server computer using SPF with no problems.
3.  I loaded SPF on my network computer (the one I actually use).
4.  I set up the port exactly as I did on my server computer, expect for the local IP address.
5.  I set up a port using SPF on my network computer.
6.  This port continues to fail the SPF port tester.
7.  I'm trying to forward a port for uTorrent.  The uTorrent program also confirms that there is no port open.

That is where I stand right now.  I can connect from my server (router) computer, but not from a network computer.
Endless thanks for your continued help and support
