Pagefile and Ram crazy consumption! Please help me >.<
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:53:02 AM »
I had wrote something nicer but, it deleted it self cause it was too fun!! :omg: :omg: :omg: T_T
Me and my little rabbit would appreciate if you help me =)
Hi everyone!
I've been using and testing this program for 8 hours now and as you said: it works. It's keeping under control the memory consumption and usage of the programs I use, which is very good.
But I still have a problem.
As it's known Firefox has a lot of memory leaks and is one of the programs I HAVE to use but I don't want to, because it slows down so much my PC that I just can't use it. After being inactive for some minutes (15 or so) it gets stuck for several minutes or barely respond (it shows some script error, also) which is... disgusting,  and I couln't bear it anymore and I'm hating it so I changed to Chrome, and so far it is behaving good :)

However this didn't solve the problem of my PC consuming too much RAM and getting stuck(Firefox). One reason is that I still use Firefox, but without addons, scripts, extensions, toolbars, etc. cause I thought they were getting it worse.. and I use it ONLY for 1 web site that Chrome takes as a malicious site and refuses opening it. For the rest of sites I use Chrome.

Well, I'm trying to be brief. Knowing that, I thought it was all because of the memory leaks of firefox so I change it to Chrome. But as I explained the problem persists and when I open a program that comsumes a lot of RAM and Pagefile Memory this problem gets worse! (I noticed that after navigating for some hours it happens too! with no reason!!) Suddenly ram and Pagefile memory start going up and down starting by showing that 1.2 GB of Pagefile memory is being used and no more than 5 or 10 Mb of Ram is available, which is crazy cause I have no heavy programs running! sometimes it gets like that from rhe begining when I've just turned on my PC, with NO programs runing O_O Starts showing 900 Mb of Pagefile memory consumption and NO ram available, goes up and down with no solution!! after waiting 10 or so minutes it gets stable for some hours then again!! and so on!!
WHAT CAN I DO!??! I've been searching for a solution and I got here with ur program, it's working and helping control this but it doesn't solve the problem cause in this moment I only had (cause I've just closed it)one website opened with firefox and typing this at Chrome and Pagefile memory shows 900 mb of usage!!! So my pc it's pretty slow right now :( what's the problem? is there a safe way to clean up Pagefile memory? ur program cleans RAM memory but doesn't touch Pagefile memory which is the one that causes the problem by staying busy and crazy all the time!! PLEASE help me!
Please tell me what is the problem and how I can solve it, is it a Windows XP memory leak? would installing sp3 solve the problem? is it Firefox ¬¬? is it because of the heat of the comp? And why if CleanMem is checking ram memory this gets saturated this way? Whatever it is please help me!! I need a solution U_U

My PC has 512 Mb of Ram it's a Pentium 4, 3.0 ghz, Win Xp Sp2. Pagefile up to 1.5 Gb, using Nod32 v.4 (Is this antivirus too heavy for my pc? which should I use instead? an older version?) I hope u can help me and this message is in the right place!!

I've uploaded some images for u to check out and try to understand better what I say, and help me of course ^^

Always have a copy of what ur going to post!!

Please help me!! I hope the information I gave u is enough!
Thanks in advance!

- Leo.

The page file is a whole different beast and cleanmem cant touch it. Nor would you want anything messing with the page file.

The slow down is this. The bottle neck in performance on a system is the hard drive.
The page file is a virtual memory file that runs off your drive. The slower your drive the slower the system.

I use Firefox myself every day and don't have the problems you are having so we need to dig in and find out whats going on.

The first thing to do is make sure everything is up to date.

First you should get sp3 installed on XP.
Make sure Firefox is up to date (v3.6.10 as of this post)
Update java as well update 21 as of this post
and make sure flash is up to date.

Firefox uses both of these.
Also how many add-ons are in firefox right now?

The java and flash updates are VERY important as they fix a lot of security holes.

Also looking at your screen shots, when you have the high usage you had 47 processes running. When the memory was back to normal you had only 44.
What where the 3 programs you closed?

NOD32 in the past hasn't been heavy but I haven't tried using v4.

The problem is you are only using 512MB of ram in XP and that's just a bare minimum. Just remember the more Windows you open the more ram you need.

But besides NOD32 what other programs do you have running? What other icons do you see sitting next to the clock?

Also do you know how to open System Configuration Utility?

Go to the start menu, click run and then type in 'msconfig' without the quotes and then click on the startup tab and count how many in there are checked and if you can show a screen shot, even if you have to take two screen shots to show us everything running there.

You might have to many things running in the background also, is what it sounds like, or services, or possibly an infection.

Don't install SP3 I've seen it slow down to many computers, SP2 has better system performance. Every box I've put it on, I've seen a big slow down in system performance, enough so you can visibly see it.

Your Page File is shooting up because something is sucking it up is all...

You have 43 processes running with 512MB I have 26 processes with 1GB that's your problem, you've got to much going on in the background that you need to kill.

Odd, I have seen performance increases with SP3. Perhaps it has something to do with the way I tweak systems, not sure :-)
