Problems with Thomson Speedtouch and VoIP
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:45:34 AM »
Hi all and welcome to my first post ;D

My problem began the other day after setting up a Linksy's PAP2 VoIP gateway. I have got most things set up now but I am having trouble with receiving VoIP calls. My VoIP provider tells me that its because I have not enabled port forwarding on my router.

If it helps this is their last reply to my support ticket.

Quote
Hi Mr. Shane,

thank you for your e-mail.

Your device is still registering through random ports and not the standard one.
Have you tried carrying out the porting forwarding on your router as we suggested:

http://www.sipgate.co.uk/faq/index.php?do=displayArticle&article=602&id=249

Most routers have some type of login page that allows users to login and make
configuration changes.  One of these changes is called port forwarding or redirect
and is done so that your router/firewall doesn't refuse the signals from your
sipgate account.  Look at your router's documentation, usually (but not always) it
entails typing 192.168.1.1 into a browser address bar to get router access. Search
for the forwarding function, then input the mentioned port forwarding changes.

If the manual doesn't help, please contact the router's manufacturer for detailed
port forwarding instructions.

If there is anything else we can help you with, do not hesitate to get in touch
with our support. Thank you!

Now I have to be honest, I thought I was quite computer literate until I began dabbling with this and TBH I have Googled this problem so much I am positively drowning in information, so much so that I have gooten lost in it all!

So, if someone would be so kind as to give me the five year olds guide to port forwarding a Thomson ST585v6 router I'd be more pleased than a pleased thing!

My OS btw is XP home and I have set up a static IP (I think)

If you need more info/screenshots I can provide them no problem!

Regards, Chris

is your voiceIP calls going to your computer or just a phone?

Actually that shouldn't matter. You should just need to port forward the ports needed for the linksys only. Do you know which ports?

Let me know and I can help walk you through, its very simple and once you do it once you will see

Cheers for the reply, sincerely appreciated!

is your voiceIP calls going to your computer or just a phone?

Have two phone devices, one standard phone the other a phone/fax. The Linksy's PAP2 has two ports so I am using them both with seperate devices.

Actually that shouldn't matter. You should just need to port forward the ports needed for the linksys only. Do you know which ports?

I havent got a clue, like I said, as green as grass when it comes to routers and port forwarding etc.

Let me know and I can help walk you through, its very simple and once you do it once you will see

That would be brilliant if you could, thanks! :)

Hi Shane,

Nice name btw

Anyway, My dasktop is hooked up to the Thomson Speedtouch ST585v6. That is hooked up to my incoming telephone line. From the second ethernet connect I have my Linksy's PAP2 connected. It is to the PAP2 I have my two telephone devices connected.

ok I found the ports we need from the link you gave me

Quote
Standard:
Port: 5060 / UDP (SIP signaling)
Port: 5004 / UDP (RTP, language)
Port: 10000 UDP (STUN)

X-Lite:
Port 5060 / UDP
Port 8000 - 8019 / UDP
Port 10000 /UDP

I don't have any thomson guides up yet, dang it. I hired a couple of guide writers but they are slow LOL.

So you can use my simple port forwarding program instead for now. (Its free to update the router)

So first thing you need to do is log into the linksys. Find its WAN/Internet IP. Write it down.

Then install and open my Simple port forwarding program.

Your going to follow the check list.
When you go to add a rule in the program you will click on custom.
You will be adding a total of 4 rules.
for start and end port for rule one will be
5060 and UDP for protrocol. For the IP you will put the IP of the linksys I had you write down.
Rule #2 5004 UDP same linksys IP
#3 8000 Start 8019 end UDP and linksys IP
#4 1000 UDP linksys IP.

Follow the rest of the check list. Dont both doing the port tester (Step 7) as its pointless for this setup.

After the rules are in place try a incoming phone call.

Still have trouble let me know

Still having trouble :(

Done everything on the list Shane and no difference I'm afraid.

In case of a misunderstanding. The Linksy's box is my VoIP gateway. My router proper is the Thomson speedtouch. I only say this because you got me to input the Linksy's IP#.

Edit: As it never worked Shane I ran #7 and ran the test. All four ports come back failed. Not sure of the relevence of this?

The port tester wont work, your forwarding to your linksys not your computer and the port tester is for you computer :-)

Can you take a screen shot of the bottom of the port forwarding page in the Thomson? This will let me see if the rules were added.

That is half the problem Shane, I wouldnt know which page to capture and post as none of them actually list anything about port forwarding, In fact port forwarding isnt mentioned at all on any page so what I have done is just taken lots of shots which will hopefully give you what you are looking for.

Game and application sharing is what I need and I see it in there. (When you click view/remove ports button in my program it takes you there)

I also see the 4 rules. I don't have that Thomson model in the program, but most likely one of the other models in the program worked just fine for it :-) Still would like to get every screen shot for it later from you with my router screen capture program :-)

Ok, now if the phone still isn't working I have an idea why.
On many of the Thomson routers I have found a strange UDP bug. If you search the forum you will see what I am talking about.
It is where any UDP rule will failed yet TCP works fine. The fix? making one giant UDP rule.
So lets try that just for testing.

Delete the 4 rules in the router.
Then make just one rule for UDP ports 1 - 65535 UDP and to the Linksys IP.

Then once it is in try to see if a phone call can come in :-)
