Port Forwarding ongoing issue
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:44:17 AM »
Hello,
I have an ISP DSL router. I run a linksys router for wireless. I have had an ongoing port problem for about 6 months. I have never been able to open ports. I have used all sorts of programs and self helps. I have even contacted my ISP, with no progress. about two months ago I came across the "Simple Port Forwarding Tool". I downloaded it, started and within about 5 min all my ports were working perfectly( all the ones I wanted open). I thought I was done with these issues. About two weeks ago I received an error saying my ports were not open so I go back in and try to set my ISP router back up again. The simple port forwarding tool will not work at all. It goes through all the procedures, but when I go into the default page I can see that nothing is in there. What gives? I have put my internet ip address ( to my linksys router) into my ISP router DMZ.  I cannot find the problem. Any Ideas?

Hard to tell at this point.

Can you post a few screen shots?

1st one should be of the main window of my program, this will let me see your local IP.
2nd screen shot should be of the port forwarding page in the linksys. This I can confirm the rules.

Ok all the port forwarding rules look fine.

Now in the linksys go to the status page and find its internet ip address. Make sure that address is set in the DMZ of the ISP modem/router.

Ok 3 more things to check.

1st. Check the Internet IP in the ISP modem/router. Does ti match the IP on the port tester page?
2nd. does the ISP modem/Router have any firewall options that might be blocking the port forwarding?
3rd. what antivirus/firewall do you have installed?

Ah, not a fan or norton. Is the the norton that has a firewall as well? like norton 360?

Next thing to do.
Unplug the power to both the modem and linksys. wait 5 sec. plug them both back in. (Some routers need a reboot just like a computer)

Then run my port tester and post a screen shot of the results.

It is possible norton is blocking it, but I want to cover all the bases before we go that path.

Willing to bet that norton might be causing some of it. But still not 100% on that.

That fact that some ports are working and others aren't could mean 1 of 2 things.

1st, they started working after the reboot. Could we have a faulty router?
2nd. Perhaps its just timing, and norton is simply blocking the ports?

Point is, you have everything setup right and like it should be. Now we need to rule out if it is a bad router or norton

Try disabling Norton for the moment and run the port test again (assuming everything else is still the same) and post the results the same as you did before.

That should rule out Norton for you.
