accessing the LAN computers from outside
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:20:15 AM »
I don't know if this is the appropriate thread, I hope it is
I've read a lot about router, port forwarding, IP address etc, but then I seem to be unable to make this work.
My WLAN has a modem router, three computers, a VOIP phone, an IPcam and a smartphone.
If I want to access the computers from outside (from the Internet that is) I believe it's not enough to put in the browser address field the OUTSIDE IP, I should use also a port for each computer or device in the format http://my_externalIP:selected_port and of course that selected port should be forwarded under TCP protocol in the router (if I did not misunderstand explanations). :undecided:
I only succeeded in accessing the IPcam from "outside" since the port used was clearly pointed out so I just forwarded it - but for each of the computers HOW can I understand which port to forward?
Sorry if this seems too silly
Thank you

How are you wanting to connect to the computers? Are you host a server? Such as a game or something? or are you looking to access the files of the computers?

The only way you can get access to the files is to take control of the computer. Since Remote desktop will work for 1 computer, it wont work for all of them since they all would use the same port.

So the best thing for you to use is teamviewer.com

That should help with what you need and no port forwarding needed :-)

It seems that you really want to connect all your computers and have all access. Teamviewer.com is really useful in this case. I already tried to use it and it really works.

Open the browser interface on the router (192.168.123.254, enter your password and then click on Virtual Server, as this is where port forwarding is accomplished.
Enter the port number and the subnet dotted quad of the webserver in question (ie. 192.x.x.x) Then check the "enable" box and scroll down to the bottom of the page to save the changes.
Hope you have considered the security issues involved. Seems to me youu might be better off hosting all 3 webservers on one PC and use DMZ--which is available on the Barricade.
