Classic View?
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:50:07 AM »
Used to be that when I hit 'start' and then 'control panel' I had I dunno probably about 8 icons to choose from. Now I have about a jillion. Didn't like it so I figured there was a way to switch it back. Googled - found the answer - right click desktop - select themes - select classic or xp. Cool - tried it - doesn't make any difference which one I pick and apply it still comes back with a jillion (maybe a jillion and a half) icons.

Suggestions?

Wrong classic view :-)

In the control panel look on the left side menu at the top, you can change it there :-)

Not there - all I've got is 'help&support' and 'windows update' - no switch -- seems like there used to be - I was looking for it and decided I was just crazy when I couldn't find it.

it should say category view.

Let me boot up an xp machine and take a screen shot so you have something to refer to.

If ForceClassicControlPanel is set to 0, Switch to Classic View is unavailable

If ForceClassicControlPanel is set to 1, Switch to Category View is unavailable

To get back the option, follow these steps:

    * Click Start/Run and type REGEDIT
    * Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \Windows
    CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

    * Backup the registry key to a REG file. See here for more information.
    * In the right-pane, delete ForceClassicControlPanel (if exists)
    * Repeat the same in the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \  Microsoft \   Windows \  CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

    * Close Registry Editor and restart Windows

Mac,

Try this:
Open Folder Options | General tab | Tick: "Show common tasks in folders" | Apply | OK

Does this bring back the "Category View" option that Shane referred to?

I had put my reg tweaks on his system to speed it up when I was helping him out. One of the tweaks was ForceClassicControlPanel.
He just needs to remove it and he will have the option back :-)

Oh, I had a feeling that it might have been something like that.  Still...the screen shot is helpful all the same.

Evan - "Show common tasks in folders" was already checked.

Shane - Mess with the registry? -- You're kidding right? -  You and I both know I'm not qualified to do that.              Can you put those directions into MUCH smaller/detailed words?

Mac, if that was already checked then you will be fine after running Shane's file.  After that you should be able to get the screen I posted (which I assume is what you are looking for).

Let us knows how it goes.

OK - so I downloaded the file. Did extract. I then had a file - 'fix_control_panel.reg'. Did  a right click on it. Option was 'Merge'. Clicked on that and it wanted to know if I wanted to merge that with the registry. At which point I said -- "whoa" nobody said anything about a merge. Was supposed to be a Run. Since I'm not much better that 'right click - open' I figured it was time to start asking questions again.

How do I Run this file?
