New Desktop Sharing
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:18:22 PM »
I am trying to get the sharing going between the laptop and the new desktop. I can get from the laptop to the files I want on the desktop but when I open a document or a spreadsheet they come up as 'read only'. On the desktop when I clicked on 'share' I specified that it was to be shared on the network and users on the network could modify the files. What am I missing?

That should be it, just set the permissions so everyone has full access and you should be done.
Can you post a screen shot of the share settings and the permissions?

I assume that the properties would be the properties of the folder I'm trying to share -- correct? I'll give that a whirl in the morning. I'm back on the laptop for now. My baby has the desktop now and still not extremely happy since I couldn't get music playlist back.

I notice that the screen resolution is still not quite back like it was (I think). Is there a real resolution I should be looking for instead of just grab something?

For the best picture you should run the monitor for what it was meant for, which normally is the max resolution windows let you set for the monitor. Other wise you have to find one your happy with.

Let me know how the sharing goes :-)

Sad to say but sharing didn't get off the ground. When I look at properties of the folder I only have 3 tabs unlike your 5. I have General, Sharing, and Customize. When I click the 'Sharing' tab I get only 2 options. Local Sharing and Network Sharing. Nothing has any permissions with it. The network sharing has 2 blocks -- 1 to share on the network and 1 to allow network users to modify files. Both are checked. I have Windows XP Home perhaps that's why the differences? Getting sadder by the moment.

It's new to me but a used/rebuilt PC from the shop that couldn't fix my old one (I had to get something going -- can't afford a new one). They transferred a bunch of my files (data, pictures, etc.) from my old one to this one.

So now back to the question -- how do I get the sharing back like it used to be? I can see the files on the desktop from the laptop but I can't modify them.

If you already have it set like this then with windows xp home, you need to go into safe mode, the go to the properties of the folder and you will have the security tab. There you can change the permissions

Finally got up in safe mode -- scared me -- looked so different, I thought I would have a heart attack. Anyway I got properties on the folder -- picture not just like yours but advanced had permissions - turned them all on. Turned off safe mode and rebooted. Powered down laptop and brought it back up - went to a spreadsheet -- samey samey - read only!!

Now let me say a few words about directories. The guys that couldn't fix the Gateway were able to get a bunch of the files off of the Gateway and put them on this Dell. When I brought it home I was so hot to get it up and running I never bothered to set up user accounts so it has the 'owner' and I did set up 'guest' since Evan told me that he thought you had to have a 'guest' account. So all the work I have done has been under 'owner'. So when I go to 'My Computer' all I see in 'Files stored on this computer' is -- 'Shared Documents' and 'Owner Documents''. So I guess my first question would be -- If I set up user accounts like 'Mac' and 'Bettie' would I then have other option under 'My Computer' and if I did would the 'stuff' under those names then be available a little easier or would I have to do a bunch more? Now on to the really juicy part -- the way i get to 'my stuff' is -- My computer then c: then documents and settings - then Mac (which shows as shared) - then My Documents (which shows shared) then - My spreadsheets (does not show as shared) and voila there they all are including all the changes I have made recently. Now back there when I went to 'Mac' there is a folder there that says 'Mac's Spreadsheets' (shared) but when I open them up they are all down level spreadsheets. I can follow that same path from the laptop with the same results. So the questions are numerous but I guess they can all be summed up with - how do I get this mess straighned out?

I think I may see the problem. The laptop has a network group Mshome and the desktop doesn't. So I thought -- easy enough, I'll add Mshome to the desktop. Went into safe mode on desktop and went to the folder I wanted to share, sure 'nuf Mshome is not there. When I tried to add it as a group it kept carping saying it couldn't find that group. So I'm thinking well there sure is one out there (on the laptop). So on the desktop I went to 'My   network places' and it shows absolutely NOTHING (blank page). So now once again I am totally lost.
Need your help again. Remember -- use small words for the dummy.

Work group shouldn't matter. Just something to check real fast, right click on all the files in the folder, go to properties. The read only check box isnt checked is it?

In Safe mode -- I started at the beginning and the very first one I came to 'documents and settings' said 'read only' so I went to the security tab and set  permissions to write -- took it really long time to apply, I guess there were a lot of folders underneath to change. Then proceeded to check the rest of the way through the tree but they all said 'read only' but when checking the permissions they were all set to write. So I guess I don't know what 'read only' really means.

So anyway after changing those permissions I powered the laptop down and back up. Went to a spreadsheet on the laptop and loaded it. Still Read Only. No change.

Get out of safe mode at this point. When you right click and go to properties of the folder you should see a check box on the main tab at the bottom that says read only. Take the check off and hit apply :-) (No permissions tab for this one)
