System restore points
« on: June 04, 2010, 12:37:24 PM »
I did a defrag of my hard disk and found a bunch that couldn't be defraged. Mostly system restore points. I checked the system restore page and found 13 of them. I'm pretty sure there is a way to safely get rid of some of those. Plus I think you can tell it not to keep so many but don't remember how.

Any thoughts on either question -- get rid of some and don't keep so many?

Personally I hate system restore. Its not a proper backup. All the files are stored on the same drive, so the drive fails you lose it all any ways. Also it isn't worth the performance hit to the drive.

The best thing to do is turn it off (This will also clear the restore points, so turning it off, then back on will give you what you want) And setup a proper backup to an external hard drive. This way, the drive fails your data is still on the other drive.

Half the time system restore doesn't work,, and to me just inst worth the over head. But the call is up to you, if you get a lot of use out of it for some reason you may want to keep it on.  :wink:

Hi mac,

To reduce to disk space allocated for restore points, follow these steps :
- Right click on Computer and go to properties ( shorcut = Win + Pause)
- Go to System protection;
- In System configuration tab, you should see "Configure"
- In disk space usage, you are able to adjust to the used Disk space.

Thank you both. I turned it off and back on yesterday. Got a whole bunch of space back. Now I'll be able to limit how much it takes in the first place.    :cheesy:
