[Upgrade] Best router for stable online gaming, please?
« on: April 04, 2010, 01:43:42 AM »
Well, enough!  :sarcastic:

TP-Link WR461G - terrible thing, automaticaly closing/opening ports, needs to restart every day, and many others connectivity troubles.

Please, Shane, people - could you please recommend me a good (even best), stable, high-speed router for online gaming, without disconnects and configuration bugs?

I have 2 PC's at home and 1 netbook. My TP-Link WR461G always freeze after using for a day, i should to reboot it and other staff.

Doing it all for ArmA 2 multiplayer

P.s. - I ain't n00b :) Technician, programmer too, so i know about what I'm talking - really bad expirience with TP-Link WR461G.

Thank you for any feedback and recommendations!

Have you checked to see if there is a firmware upgrade that fixes any of your issues yet?  Personally I use an old Linksys WRT54G with the Tomato Firmware loaded and I don't have any problems with online gaming or surfing.

We can do our best to recommend a good router for you.  There are other things to consider though.  What devices do you connect wirelessly?  Do you use wireless G, wireless N, or both?  Do you need to host a game server?  Do you have any P2P needs?  Stuff like that.

I am a netgear fan my self :-)

I use to like Linksys. But when cisco bought them they made linksys their cheap brand. They have gone down hill since. I have had to replace more linksys routers with my customers than any other. (Even with firmware replacements like DD-WRT)

There is one thing to keep in mind. Home based routers have a connection limit. They can only handle so many connections at once. I use to have a old MSI router and every time I tried to view online games with steam the router would lock up and then need rebooted. To many connections where going out then it could handle.

I have a standard netgear wgr614 v7 and haven't had a single problem with it.
I also had a customer just by that model from the store last week, new v10. Had some nice new features in it.

The more memory a router has the more it can handle. But they don't tell those specs on the box. You have to dig to find it. I had a small business customer that was using the same netgear. But they had 25 computers and remotes going on. through out the day the internet would stop for about 1 - 2 min. This was the connection limit of the netgear. (Still pretty high though)
Upgraded them to the netgear small business router that can handle 10,000 connections and they haven't had a problem since

Evan, Shane - Thank you for such a full response!

Evan, yes, sure i upgraded to the latest firmware that was released in late 2008.
Also I've sent to TP-LINK emails - got no feedback or any changes.

If you mean mode, so i use 802.11g only. To connect sometimes only my netbook Acer Aspire.

No, not for host, connecting to server only. I have P2P programms, but sure I turn them off before playing, and restarting my PC and router.
Forwarded all ports like it should be, some times on checking for opened ports i can see it show open, and after some refreshes - closed (or time out).
I tried disable/enable uPnP, DMZ for IP reserved for my PC's MAC Address.

Yes, that what i need. If you can, please, some good and quality router for today's online gaming performance.

Shane, thanks for very helpfull info about connection limit and router memory. I'll keep it in mind. And I'm think i dont need business router for that :) just a some quality for home use.

I think a netgear will take care of you
At least that has my vote. Only only because I can back that up since I use one lol.
