Remote Desktop in to two machines on same network
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:20:28 AM »
Hi Shane

You previously helped me set up my port forwarding to allow me to use remote desktop to my PC when away from home.

I now wish to be able to remotely log in to two different machines on my home network. As I'm forwarding port 3389 to the first machine (works great!) I have forwarded 3390 to the second machine by following this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759

I'm not having any luck connecting though - maybe you could offer some advice?

Both PC's are running XP. My network setup is

Manually set the IP to 192.168.1.2 for the first machine
Manually set the IP to 192.168.1.4 for the second machine & edited the listening port to 3390

I've grabbed the following info from the router/modem combo

System Name:
ZyNOS F/W Version: V3.40(ACI.7) | 10/18/2006
DSL FW Version:DMT FwVer: 3.4.1.0_A_TC, HwVer: T14F7_0.0
Standard:ADSL_G.dmt

WAN Information

IP Address:(removed)
IP Subnet Mask:255.255.255.255
Default Gateway:MyISP
VPI/VCI:8/ 35

LAN Information

MAC Address:00:02:cf:4d:69:85
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
IP Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP: Server
DHCP Start IP: 192.168.1.33
DHCP Pool Size: 32

WLAN Information

ESSID:ZyXEL
Channel: 6
WEP: 64-bit WEP

Oh, and I've added the exceptions in the firewall (both machines).

Thanks :) pilkster

Np I have done this many times for customers of mine

First off I have NEVER been able to get remote desktop to work on any other port other than 3389. I followed that Microsoft guide and remote desktop will not work if you change the port number. I don't know why, I just know it won't. As you have already seen for your self

So the trick to get this to work is going to be up to your router and if it has the option we need.
I had to setup a customer last week with 4 remote desktops. Had the user buy a Linksys WRT54GL router and I then flashed it with the DD-WRT firmware. The linksys firmware didn't have what I needed but the DD-WRT did.

And that option is to have a connection come in on one port and get sent to another.
http://www.pcwintech.com/showimage?file=files/screenshots/DD-WRT_v24_micro/019.png

As you see on this page you can put the From port and then the To port.
So I would setup a user to come in on port 4000 and have it go to port 3389 of the computer.

So here is how it looked for the 4 I setup in the DD-WRT

Remote1 - 4000 - TCP - 192.168.2.5 - 3389
Remote2 - 4001 - TCP - 192.168.2.6 - 3389
Remote3 - 4002 - TCP - 192.168.2.7 - 3389
Remote4 - 4003 - TCP - 192.168.2.8 - 3389

So for each user I told them to log into the remote by adding the port to the address

Example: 99.99.99.99:4001
Next user would use
Example: 99.99.99.99:4002

When they came in on those ports the router knew which computer to send it to and to send it to port 3389.

I hope I made this clear, its past midnight and I need sleep LOL.
I am writing a repair WMI and Windows Firewall tool for my toolbox page and I lose track of time lol.

Hi Shane

Thanks for the reply. You'll have to award yourself a day off sometime.

What you said makes sense, however I can't find the option on my Zyxel router :(

Guess I'm going to have to use VNC or teamviewer on the second machine which isn't ideal but beats buying a new router (for now at least).

Best regards.

Teamviewer will take care of you till then
And I do take time off. Just not entire days lol. All my free time goes to my family or exercise. The rest of the time I work.
I love to work and have large family. So I have to work, they depend on me :-)

Take care!
