I have been away sosorry for the delay in posting my resolution.
I tried using an alternative browser and also an older version of IE. No joy. I then made contact with other students who had successfully connected and from the kiy they were using I worked out it must be the ISP.
Back on the phone and fairly reasonably they pointed out that borrowing my log on details they could log on OK. However the ISP does have blocking filters to which I subscribe to (a sort of net nanny facility) and they offered me the option of coming off that service which I accepted. Hey presto my connection to Elluminate worked and I was able to gain full access.
What a marathon - hope this helps - the only silver lining is that I know am much more clued up on how the internet actually works.

Thats 2 for 3 of being the ISP.
Well I happy for the 3 of you, looks like you found the problem  :artist:

gkb573 your the last one. The other 2 connected to a different ISP or had filtering removed and they work.
Lets get you fixed up then I will lock the thread.

Hi Shane

Many thanks for your continuing interest & support. It has occured to me to do as you suggest, so thanks also for the info on what exactly to compare. I will do this because I want to get to the bottom of it, but it will take a while. In the meantime I have my own workaround.

BTW, another student on my course has posted that she has the same problem and in her case she used a different laptop on the same connection (I presume this to be the same ISP) and that worked. As I said in one of my posts, a different ISP didn't do it for me either, but shortly I will try yet another one, in a different country. Interesting that in rr38's case it worked using a different ISP.............  not sure what that suggests?!

One way or the other I will report back.

Many thanks
g
