Wake on LAN
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:29:57 AM »
Hi, I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to this stuff, so perhaps some one could help me.

I want to be able to use LogMeIn to access my PC computer when I am away from home for any length of time. I have set the BIOS to Wake on LAN, and using my wireless laptop while at home I am able to turn on my PC through LogMeIn. However, when I am away from home, it does not work - I do not see the turn-me-on button on the LogMeIn page. Support forums at LogMeIn tell me that I need to have at least one machine turned on in my LAN for this to work - but the PC is the only machine on my LAN when I am away, as I have my laptop with me, and I do not want to leave my PC on for weeks at a time.

Is what I am trying to do impossible? Or can I use port forwarding through the router (BT Home Hub 2)?

How wake on lan works is by the MAC address of the network card, not by IP. Because when the computer is off the network card doesn't have an IP. Also since routers only port forward to IP addresses you can see why this wont work. The reason they say you need at least 1 computer on is so the command goes to their software on the computer and it sends the command to the network card.

So you have limited options. One options is to do as they say, but you don't have another computer :-)
The other options is to get a router that supports the 3rd party firmware DD-WRT, this firmware supports wake on lan

Those are pretty much your options unless I am not thinking of something lol
