Can forward Tcp but not Udp. (Zyxel p-320w)
« on: December 09, 2009, 12:45:10 PM »
Ok so i can only forward Tcp ports for some reason with my rauter. Maybe its just me who is blind but i will show some pictures of simple port forwarding and on my rauter page.

Ok so here is the ports i have forward

And here is where all UDP ports failed.

And as you can see on my rauter page is that there is no opinion to choose between UDP/TCP so i dont know if it just "assumes" i want Tcp only?

I Tested with the "Simple Port Tester" program and it showed the same. Well actually those ports i forwarded to be UDP was Tcp aswell.
How can i forward Udp ports?

Thats a good question!
As you have seen your router gives you no options of TCP or UDP, you would think it would open both. But as you are seeing only TCP is working.

I attached the screen that does have UDP options, and that's in the firewall.
Lets check the firewall settings and see if perhaps udp is being blocked, or if we need to add a UDP rule to allow it through.

Well Ive checked it out now Shane but i really do not see anything wrong with it. Heres how it looks:
I mean everything seems just fine to me? Am i just blind or what is the problem ;S?

Edit: I just found out after looking around abit on my pc and trying different methods that it is my ESET Smart Security 4.0 that is blocking the UDP ports. But i just cant find out how to stop blocking them. I cant just keep my eset turned off since i want my anti-virus? ;S

Personally I like Avira www.free-av.com (and it gets better marks http://www.av-comparatives.org/:cheesy:

Unless you need to block programs from getting on the internet you don't really need a firewall installed. A router is a hardware based firewall. How a router protects you is by the basics of how it works.
A router takes a internet connection and routes it to multiple computers, thus the name router. When a connection tries to come in the router doesn't know what to do with it, so it drops it. (also this is how it keeps people from hitting your computer)
A port forwarding rule is just telling the router what to do with the connection on that port. And since you need to open that port in your firewall on your computer then the software firewall isn't doing anything for you. I have never been a fan of all the companies putting firewalls in everything lol. A lot of my customers don't even know what a firewall is. They get freaked out when they see a box come up saying something is trying to get on the net and they click block, on everything! Then they call me to say their internet doesn't work lol.

The only time I think a person should have a firewall installed is when they are not behind a router, then they need the protection :-)

But this is just my opinion, doesn't mean it is right lol.

Lets put it this way,  I haven't needed a firewall installed in years. My router does the job for me. Because if a real hacker wants to get through they will get through, no matter what. If the freaking pentagon can get hacked then there isn't crap going to help me.  :artist:

Thx Shane. I have now solved the problem. I looked around in my anti-virus program (ESET) and eventually i found a way to allow ports thru the firewall.

Thx for your help Shane and now i feel like enjoying my ports :).
