program won't start
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:03:43 PM »
I saw a locked thread about the same problem, but the solution there didn't help me.  I'm trying to get simple port forwarding to load up, but every time I open the program it displays the startup message, then it disappears and nothing else happens.  I'm running windows 7 64 bit, I've restarted the computer and reinstalled the program several times, changed admin settings, everything.  What could be stopping it from loading?

I am about to head to bed, midnight here, so I will answer in the morning if you still have trouble :-)

The only thing the program opens when it runs is the database files, which is the first thing it does after the splash screen. Any time the program doesn't run it has always been due to something going on with MDAC.

Did you run the repair MDAC tool from http://www.pcwintech.com/shanes-toolbox
Run it as administrator and then reboot after it is done.

I'm on Windows 7 32 bit myself and have no trouble.

If all else fails let me know, I will make a special program that will try to open the database, but I will have it display as much info as I can to try and track the problem down

Night!

I ran the MDAC tool already (that's what the other thread said), restarted, still nothing.  I've also run everything as administrator, and tried all the compatibility modes.

Shouldn't need compatibility mode.
I will make the test program here in just a bit.

Ok I made a Test MDAC tool
http://www.pcwintech.com/shanes-toolbox

Very simple, It will try to open and connect to a test database. If any problems happen it should say. Lets see what it shows us.

OK try the new spf 2.7.0 and see if you still have trouble. I will make a special version of spf. I have it ignoring errors at startup currently, I will change that and see if we can get it to show us what is giving it trouble.

Ok make sure Simple Port Forwarding 2.7.0 is installed. Then replace the spf.exe with the one attached.

All I did was change it from ignoring the errors (If any) to stopping when it gets one.
Lets see if this will help shed some light on whats going on

np

If it isn't even giving an error then it seems like something else is killing it, since no error is even being passed to it.

2 things we should check. First is DEP enabled? I attached a screen of what it should be at.
And second what antivirus are you using? any chance some other program might be in the way?

the DEP is on the correct setting.  I'm using AVG and SpyBot, but I disabled both as well as most other running programs and it still doesn't work.

Follow up,
Problem fixed  :cheesy:
Turned out to be a MDAC problem. When I connected and checked somethings out I found that one of the files in the DAO folder was missing. I copied the file over and the program worked just fine.

I have also updated the setup program to have that missing file just in case, so this shouldn't happen to others
